This paper describes the possibility of removing of nitrates, thus a denitrification of industrial wastewater with low organic matter by the pond culture. Pond culture in the form of microorganisms in the pond mud plays a major role in the self cleaning water in natural reservoirs. The use of pond culture for wastewater treatment is primarily motivated by the requirement for low economic and human resources of the cleaning process. Laboratory experiments with pond mud were intended to clarify the basic relationships of biological, physical and chemical processes. The effect of the amount of mud, presence of organic substrate, phosphorus, temperature and access of air (oxygen) to remove nitrates was monitored. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
