The health-care quality landscape in the United States is rapidly changing due to sweeping health-care reform legislation and increased value-driven cost-control pressures on payers and providers. Quality of care will increasingly affect payment for health-care services by both governmental and private payers. Many potential pitfalls and challenges exist in developing methodologies to measure and report quality, specifically in orthopaedic surgery. The orthopaedic profession should strive to be at the forefront of these changes in health-care quality, in order to ensure that meaningful, fair, and transparent measures are used to improve the safety and efficacy of musculoskeletal care.
