Plant descriptors are an identifiable and measurable characteristic of an accession and entrusted with the responsibility of collection, conservation, maintenance and characterization under the mandated key activity of the national gene bank for opium poppy plant it is an essential part of documentation. After analyzing substantial amount of variability for the different quantitative and qualitative traits across hundreds of germplasm accessions opium poppy plant descriptors have been developed. The basic unit in plant genetic resources management is the descriptor. Hence, data needed to be standardized in term of descriptor or descriptor states for making an information system more meaningful and applicable. Although the suggested coding is on the pattern of the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) format, it should not be regarded as definitive scheme published descriptors for different medicinal and aromatic plants rather this format only represents an important tool a standardized characterization system. These descriptor lists are intended to be comprehensive for the descriptors that they contain and should be used when they are useful to the curator for the management and maintenance of the collection and/or to the users of plant genetic resources.
