PURPOSE: To study the role of optical coherence tomography in central serous chorioretinopathy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 48 eyes of 48 patients with a clinical diagnosis of central serous chorioretinopathy were evaluated with spectral domain optical coherence tomography. After detailed ocular examination, followed by fundus fluorescein angiography, optical coherence tomography was performed and various anatomic features were noted. RESULTS: Out of 48 eyes, 41 had acute and 7 had chronic central serous chorioretinopathy. The mean age of the patients was 35 (SD7.1) years with male (83.4%) preponderance in our study. All patients had unilateral involvement with blurring of vision (43.75%) and metamorphopsia (31.25%) being the main presenting complaints. Fundus fluorescein angiography revealed a total of 56 leakage points with ink-blot pattern being 6 times more frequent than smoke-stack pattern in our study. On optical coherence tomography neurosensory detachment was seen in 44 eyes. Total macular thickness ranged from 220 mu m-1120 mu m (mean +/- SD: 447 +/- 219) and vault height ranged from 100 mu m-900 mu m (mean +/- SD: 350 +/- 187). Retinal pigment epithelial abnormality was seen in 87.5% eyes, retinal pigment epithelial detachment in 18.75% eyes and retinal pigment epithelial bulge in 27.09% patients. CONCLUSION: Optical coherence tomography can be used as a complimentary diagnostic tool in central serous chorioretinopathy.
