Pyrolysis is an attractive method for converting solid/liquid carbon-based fuels into higher -value or more convenient products. During the process, organic compounds are decomposed into smaller species, which can be utilized as a fuel. Pyrolysis is also recognized as an efficient and low-cost process to produce a valuable liquid fuel. This liquid product contains a large amount of oxygenates which can be led to several negative properties such as low heating value, high viscosity, and low stability. The use of catalyst is the most promising technique to improve the quality of the liquid product. The present study presents a review on catalytic pyrolysis of carbon-based materials for production upgraded fuel. In this review, three types of catalysts such as alkaline/alkali, activated char, supported metals were used to study their influence on the quality and composition of final products. Effect of process temperature and catalysts on tar yield and conversion (%) were also studied.
