Impingement cooling is an important and new cooling technique used in the steel quenching process. Unfortunately, little experimental data are available on the rate of heat extraction from the steel surface. For example, as one of the most important heat treatment processes, quenching of steel refers to the cooling from the solution treating temperature, typically 845 degrees C-870 degrees C, into the hard structure martensite. This paper addresses a comprehensive literature survey on different cooling techniques and various factors affecting the heat transfer characteristics during these cooling schemes.
