A comparison of hydroxyl ion diffusion through root dentine from various calcium hydroxide preparations

Emanuel Plataniotis et al.

Summary: Different formulations of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) were compared in terms of hydroxyl ion release. pH levels were measured in inner and outer dentine cavities over a period of 12 weeks. Inner dentine pH rapidly increased for all groups except the points and controls, reaching a peak pH of 8.0-9.2 on day 2 before stabilizing. Outer dentine pH steadily rose until day 21 for aqueous solutions and then stabilized at 8.0-8.5. The type of paste base did not affect the release and diffusion of hydroxyl ions, which continued for 84 days.
