Nitrovanillin porphyrin (1) was synthesized in good yield and successfully utilized as colorimetric, naked-eye sensor for toxic CN- and F- ions. The synthesized probe detects CN- and F- ions via anion induced deprotonation, which brings about drastic spectral and colorimetric changes, among the commonly known anions such as OAc-, H2PO4-, Cl-, Br-, I-, ClO4-, HSO4- and PF6-. The toxic CN- and F- ions interact selectively with the -OH protons of 1 as established via(1)HNMR, UV-Visible and fluorescence spectroscopic methods. The sensor could detect F- ions similar to 1.1 ppm and CN- ions similar to 1.34ppm which is very appreciable and promising.
