This paper investigates a novel phytodyeing process of natural fibers: cotton, wool and silk, using a natural aqueous extract of Parthenocissus quinquefolia L. The extraction of the natural dye from P. quinquefolia was accomplished using ultrasonic energy with a power of 500 W and a frequency of 20 kHz. Anthocyanins which are the main colouring components of the dye extract were isolated, characterized and identified by HPLC-MS analysis. The dyeability of cotton was achieved after pre-cationising step. The effects of the percentage of cationisant, the dyebath pH, the dyeing temperature and the dyeing duration were investigated. The influence of mordanting on the phytodyeing quality of cat ionised cotton, wool and silk by the aqueous extract of P. quinquefolia was also studied. The dyeing qualities obtained were evaluated by the colour strength (K/S) and the fastness properties of dyed fabrics. Remarkable phytodyeing performances were found proving that the aqueous extract of P. quinquefolia could be a promising natural resource to dye textile fabrics. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
