To evaluate the brain oxidative stress in experimental diabetes with eventual changes in brain neuro-transmitters, the potential protective role of carvacrol-based nanoemulsion against the changes streptozotocin (STZ) induced was examined. Oil/water emulsion technique was used for the preparation of carvacrol based nanoemulsion in presence of nonionic surfactant (Tween 80). Results signify that Tween 80 had an appreciable impact on mean droplet diameter giving rise to very small diameter with high monodispersity and high negative on their surfaces. In vivo study indicating upgrading of fasting blood sugar along with a reduction of insulin in diabetic rats concomitant with disturbances in oxidative stress parameters and elevation of homocysteine (Hcy) level. In contrast, revealing disturbances in the brain neurotransmitters and other biochemical parameters were increased by carvacrol nanoemulsion supplementation. The well stabilized carvacrol-based nanoemulsion is considered as promising agent that offers a new approach in attenuating hyperglycemia as well as neurodegenerative diseases. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
