The Moving Particle Semi-Implicit (MPS) method is feasible in dealing with problems with free surface and the complex motion of boundaries. However, few studies about the application of MPS method on the interaction between floating body and waves were published in the past. In the present study, an in-house particle solver MLParticle-SJTU based on improved MPS (IMPS) method is applied to numerically investigate the roll motion of a two-dimensional floating body in low-amplitude regular waves. Effectiveness of the improvements employed in the solver is firstly validated by the test of hydrostatic pressure, and the oscillation of pressure field can be obviously suppressed by the IMPS method. Then, Numerical Wave Tank (NWT), include wave generation, wave absorption and motion of floating body modules, are developed in present solver. Accuracy of wave generation in the NWT is validated by the simulation of linear regular waves. Time histories of wave elevation are compared between the numerical result and analytical solution. Agreement shows that present IMPS method is capable for wave generation. Finally, roll motions of floating body in waves with different frequencies are investigated. The response amplitude operators (RAO) for roll motions are in agreement with experimental data. The solver shows good capacity in solving the problem of interaction between floating body and regular waves. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
