A novel fluorescent probe made up of rhodamine 6G and pyrazine has been designed and synthesized. This probe displays colorimetric and 'turn-on' fluorescence response to the paramagnetic Co2+ under physical condition. Fluorescence imaging Co2+ in living cells demonstrates that Rhpz may be used for monitoring Co2+ within biological samples. Considering the difficulty in design of 'turn on' fluorescent probe for the paramagnetic metal ions, rhodamine-pyrazine conjugates stimulates the further construct of complicated architecture to detect paramagnetic metal ions.
