A disposable voltammetric sensor is reported for the detection of ferrous ions in aqueous medium. Screen printed electrodes (SPE) modified with Schiff base derivative having methylene bridge forming a wedge between two Schiff base motifs (SMS-1) have been developed. A receptor compound (SMS-1) was used for the electrochemical detection of Fe (II). Surface modification of the modified SPE was confirmed with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. Electrochemical behavior of the ionophore (SMS-1) modified SPE was investigated with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Detection of Fe (II) is based on voltammetric response of the receptor-Fe (II) complex. Under optimized conditions, peak current of the complex depended linearly on the amount of Fe (II) in the concentration range of 0.6 mu M-4.0 mu M with the limit of detection (LOD) as 0.54 mu M, in an aqueous medium. The proposed sensor can selectively detect Fe (II) in the presence of a number of commonly occurring interfering ions. The method has been used to sense ferrous ions in real life samples. Moreover, modified voltammetric sensor can be used 3-4 times after washing with EDTA. Receptor Fe (II) complex formation has been supported by DFT studies. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
