The aim of this review is to introduce mercaptoacetic acid (MAA) as a potential capping agent and sulfur source in the synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) nanostructured metal sulfides such as CdS, ZnS and PbS nanostructures. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, the concentration of MAA and source of metal (conventional salt or complex salt) on the phase and morphology evolutions of the product have been reviewed. The general strategies and formation mechanism of 1D growth, well as the optical properties of the products, have been discussed using this new capping agent. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
