A breakdown cavity was designed to study the high-gradient microwave breakdown on a metal surface. The breakdown cavity can be distinguished into an electron emission boundary and a bombardment boundary as there is an evident difference in amplitude of the electric field between the two planes in the cavity. Breakdown tracks on the cavity were studied with an electron scanning microscope. The tracks on the electron emission boundary with the higher electric field were eroded; a component analysis indicates that these tracks contain an emission boundary material. On the bombardment boundary with a lower electric field, two kinds of tracks exist: an erosion track containing a bombardment boundary material and a sputtered track containing an emission boundary material. From these tracks, the mechanisms of high-gradient microwave breakdown on a metal surface have been analyzed. Published by AIP Publishing.
