A phosphine-catalyzed domino process of benzofuranones with allenoates has been developed which furnishes highly functionalized unsymmetrical 3,3-disubstituted benzofuranones in synthetically useful yields. The mechanism for the transformation is a tandem beta-umpolung/gamma-umpolung process.
