Quinolin-2(1H)-ones and phenanthridin-6(5H)-ones are synthesized in high yields by K2CO3-promoted cyclization of N-aryl-beta-bromo-alpha,beta-unsaturated amides and N-aryl-2-bromobenzamides in dimethyl-formamide under microwave irradiation.
