A bilayer Zr0.84Y0.16O1.92-La0.8Sr0.2Cr0.5Fe0.5O3-delta (YSZ-LSCrF) dual-phase membrane with a hierarchical structure is successfully prepared for membrane reactor application by the freeze-drying tape-casting method. The oxygen permeation flux of the membrane is extremely enhanced from 0.001 32 to 0.0165 mol m(-2) s(-1) at 950 degrees C under an air/CO gradient, which is attributed to the effectively decreased gas diffusion resistance in the support as well as the significantly lowered oxygen ion diffusion resistance in the functional layer. The superior oxygen permeability and stability enable the bilayer YSZ-LSCrF oxygen transport membrane to be a suitable candidate for membrane reactor applications.
