This review is focused on integrating transition metal-based nanomaterials to form hybrid catalysts with heterointerfaces. Such heterointerfaces can help in manipulating the functionalities of the hybrid catalysts to enhance the performance of targeted energy conversion processes. We first present an overview of the recent progress in developing various heterostructured hybrid catalysts and their fabrication strategies with emphasis on the enhanced and/or broadened functionalities, followed by a full discussion on the structure-function relationship that has emerged from both experimental and theoretical investigations. Finally, a forward-looking outlook assessing unexplored research areas and future directions is provided. (c) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
