Rape extract was produced by macerating rape grist in 2-propanol alcohol and tested as a mild steel corrosion inhibitor in tap water. The weight loss and polarization techniques showed at least 15 times corrosion rate reduction in 700 h. LPR measurements revealed the main corrosion rate reduction after 40 h of exposure. The GC-MS and FT-IR techniques were used to analyze the composition of extract, inhibited water solution and mild steel surface. The formation of aromatic hydrocarbon (arene) and aromatic aldehydes due to extract transformation in water causes main corrosion reduction in 40 h. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
