Preparation of Barrier SiO2 Coating on Carbon Fibers by the Sol-Gel Method

The paper shows the application of the sol-gel coatings as protective for carbon fibers. A precursor of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in ethanol as a source of silicon dioxide was used. The morphology of the carbon fibers surface before and after coating and during heat treatment is shown. The results of isothermal oxidation at a temperature of 600 degrees C depending on the soaking time of the fiber in the sol-gel solution are presented. The weight loss of the coated carbon fiber is almost 2 times higher than the weight loss of the uncoated carbon fiber. During annealing, the fiber thickness decreases, which correlates with microstructural data and with changes in the weight of the samples. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
