A facile green synthesis of trace Si, Sr and F multi-doped hydroxyapatite with enhanced biocompatibility and osteoconduction

Ternary trace elements Si, Sr and F multi-doped HA (Si + Sr + F-HA, Si: 56 ppm; Sr: 87 ppm; F: 190 ppm) is synthesized for the first time through a one-pot hydrothermal method. SiO2 as silicon source, SrO as strontium source and CaF2 as fluorine source are used to avoid undesired ion interference. XRD patterns show that the products are pure HA phases. HA and Si + Sr + F-HA samples have hierarchical structures with oriented HA nanorods assembled into the platy particles. The in vitro cell experiments show that Si + Sr + F-HA exhibit excellent biocompatibility, and promote the adhesion and proliferation of osteoblast MG63. This study not only proposes a novel reaction system for multi-ions doping, but also confirms the important function of trace elements in human hard tissues, and the multi ion-doped HA HA is expected to be used as promising implant materials.
