Representing socioeconomic, cultural and natural features of the communities, and conveyed from generation to generation, vernacular houses are a significant part of the heritage and the local identity which are facing various challenges in the contemporary world and various attempts made for the conservation of vernacular houses, it is found out that local people's appreciation, desire for conservation and participation are the vital factors for the continuity of the process. Therefore, this research aims to find out the existing situation of vernacular houses and the residents' perception towards the conservation in the rural areas of Trabzon, Turkey where rural conservation activities have been recently initiated. Architectural documentation and semi-structured questionnaire surveys are conducted. It is found out that vernacular houses have undergone various changes, providing better living conditions; but negatively affecting the authenticity of the houses. They have the mindset to conserve vernacular houses; yet, they are unaware of the proper actions to take for the conservation financial and technical supports as well as the conservation activities conducted by the local government. Still being in the initial stage, this is a crucial time to initiate a more inclusive, integrated and participatory process for the conservation activities in the region.
