A series of host-guest materials containing polyoxometalate anions and lanthanide-organic layers have been synthesized and structurally characterized. By anion-pi interactions between the anions and the pi-acidic naphthalenediimide moieties, the materials emit strong red room-temperature phosphorescence and exhibit reversible photochromism.
