A simple method is provided to achievein situsurface reconstruction synthesis of a heterostructural NiO/Ni film on carbon cloth (NiO/Ni@CC) for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This ultrafast reconstruction process brings a hydrophilic surface and abundant heterostructures with rich oxygen vacancies exhibiting a low HER overpotential and remarkable stability.
