Background: From ancient times, some plants have been used in folk medicine due to their natural origin and their recognized health benefits. Fruits, leaves, pits and pollen from Phoenix dactylifera have been included for the treatment of different health diseases and disorders, since they are an important source of bioactive compounds that are mainly responsible for their biological activity. Their high nutritive value and their potential curative effects have increased their use, encourage by the growing consumer concern for health. As a result, it has reverted to the use of natural products, commonly used as food and in traditional medicine. Scope and approach: This review includes recent information about antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, as well as potential health benefits of Phoenix dactylifera and its products. Key Findings and conclusions: Several properties have been associated with these products such as anticarcinogenic, anti-hyperglycaemic, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, nephroprotective or neuroprotective effects, which could become as alternative therapies for the common health problems. Phenolic compounds, carotenoids, phytosterols and phytoestrogens isolated from the products of Phoenix dactylifera have been linked to these properties.
