Wireless charging of power wheelchair allows convenient charging with hands-free operation for the people with disabilities. In this paper, the design of a 1 kW wireless charging system is presented, and the hardware results are demonstrated. The system utilizes an LCC-LCC compensation and dual-side control strategy with wireless communication to control the battery current. The system supplies 1 kW over a misalignment range of 5 cm. The primary and secondary coils are optimized to keep the magnetic field within the safety limit of 27 mu T at full power transfer and maximum-misalignment condition. A grid-to-battery efficiency of 85% is achieved for the rated output power, the operating frequency of 100 kHz, and an average air gap of 4.5 cm.
