Design and Construction of a Foil Winding Permanent Magnet Machine

The design of a permanent magnet machine using foil conductor concentrated windings is presented in this paper. A design procedure, derived from previous work is revised to detail the use of foil armatures in PM machines. The design procedure begins with fixed parameters and proceeds through the magnetic and electrical parameters that define the boundary conditions for the machine. A prototype foil conductor machine is then constructed and presented to highlight the implementation of foil windings, primarily the high fill factor, simple construction, and superior thermal performance.
