Alkylbenzene was observed during continuous hydrodeoxygenation of anisole in toluene. Besides acidic compositions, metals in catalysts play an important role in the transalkylation reaction during the HDO of anisole. Some metals (e.g. NiMo) that enabled partial hydrogenation could temporarily destroy aromaticity, resulting in a high yield of alkylated products. In addition, a high temperature facilitated transalkylation, while temperatures over 400 degrees C caused severe aromatic condensation.
