Single-objective versus multi-objective theories of the firm: using a constitutional perspective to resolve an old debate

Ingo Pies et al.

Summary: This article contributes to the ongoing debate on whether firms in competitive markets should pursue objectives other than purely financial ones, proposing a constitutional perspective that reconciles and improves the single-objective and multi-objective approaches. The distinction between the sub-constitutional level of action and the constitutional level of rules is key to understanding the equally important but categorically different roles played by single-objective and multi-objective theories of the firm.
