Youth, mobilities and multicultures in the rural Anglosphere: positioning a research agenda

Rose Butler

Summary: Rural mobilities have significantly impacted the social composition of rural areas in the Global North, with a particular focus on the role of young people in rural livelihoods. However, there is limited understanding of how youth are navigating rural multiculturalism in today's era of accelerated mobilities and neoliberal restructuring. Scholarship has identified three key trends in young people's social relationships across ethnic and racial differences, including analyses of identity construction, policy responses to youth mixing, and strategies for managing racism. Prospective research at the intersection of rural studies, youth multicultures, and race is crucial for understanding identity and social relations for young people in the current geopolitical context.

Perceptions of Eastern European migrants in an English village: the role of the rural place image

Helen Moore

Summary: This article highlights the impact of post-accession EU migrants on rural areas of England and emphasizes the importance of examining social interactions at a local scale. It discusses how English village residents perceive Eastern European migrants and the complex dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in these communities. The findings reveal a discourse of migrants 'fitting in' with the village image but also point to underlying ambivalent attitudes and power imbalances.
