Struggling to breathe: COVID-19, protest and the LIS response

Amelia N. Gibson et al.

Summary: This article provides a follow up to the Libraries on the Frontlines: Neutrality and Social Justice published in 2017 by addressing institutional responses to protests and uprisings in 2020 after the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd. The authors, as women of color faculty and library professionals, comment on how libraries are responding to current events and the possibilities for panethnic solidarity, calling for concrete actions to actively combat racism within organizations. The paper explores recent reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic and racial uprisings of 2020 within the context of library and information science, updating and expanding the appeals made in 2017 that librarianship must not remain neutral in the face of Black Lives Matter.
