This study investigates the seismic control of the MSSS using tuned inerter damper (TID) and compares it with other control strategies. The effectiveness of the TID is verified through analysis of a multistorey MSSS, showing its performance is better than viscous damper (VD) and tuned mass damper (TMD) within the recommended working scope.
Mega-sub structure system (MSSS) is a newly developed super high-rise system, which can reveal different control effect by designing the mega frame and the sub structure. This paper studies the seismic control of the MSSS using tuned inerter damper (TID), comparing with existing control strategies. First, a simplified model for the MSSS is used to establish the equation of motion of the TID-enhanced MSSS. Second, an optimization procedure based on minimizing the relative displacement of the sub structure is proposed to obtain the optimal tuning parameters of the TID. Third, the TID-enhanced MSSS is fully analyzed by the defined indices in comparison with existing control strategies using viscous damper (VD), base isolation (BIS), and tuned mass damper (TMD). Finally, a multistorey MSSS is designed to test the effectiveness of the TID. Results from the analyses of the simplified model have shown that the TID is better to be utilized when the sub structure is more flexible than the mega frame. Otherwise, the BIS is more suitable to be considered. In addition, the effectiveness of the TID has been verified by the analyses of the multistorey MSSS. Comprehensive analyses show that within the recommended working scope of TID, its performance is better than that of VD and TMD.
