The impact of vocabulary and spelling on judgments of ESL essays: an analysis of teacher comments

Summary: This experimental study investigated the impact of vocabulary and spelling on teachers' perceptions of ESL essays. The results showed that varying levels of vocabulary sophistication and spelling quality led to different feedback from teachers, suggesting a correlation between teachers' perceptions of strengths and weaknesses with their holistic and analytic assessments of the texts.
