Epidemiology and Clinical Characteristics of Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis Caused by Naegleria fowleri: A Global Review

Radhika Gharpure et al.

Summary: PAM is a rare but deadly disease with a global occurrence. Improved clinician awareness may lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment, potentially increasing survival among PAM patients. The case definition of probable used in this study seems to effectively capture cases of PAM, as shown by similarities in outcomes, clinical course, and CSF profile to confirmed cases. Clinicians could use this case definition in the absence of confirmatory testing to identify cases of PAM.
