Mere presence of informal guardians deters burglars: a virtual reality study

Summary: The study found that the presence of guardians is an effective deterrent for residential burglary for both burglars and non-burglars. For burglars, guardianship increased the perceived likelihood of getting caught and social cohesion, but decreased neighborhood attractiveness.
