Understanding Visual Risk Communication Messages: An Analysis of Visual Attention Allocation and Think-Aloud Responses to Tornado Graphics

Jeannette Sutton et al.

Summary: Online channels, especially social media like Twitter, offer features to support sharing images of risk, including maps, photographs, videos, and graphical information. Visual cues such as colors, shapes, and sizes play a crucial role in understanding potential threats and populations at risk. Attention to visual features in messages about potential threats is the necessary first step in decision making for protective actions. These findings could help practitioners improve the design of weather messages to inform the public of emerging threats.

Geographic scale and probabilistic forecasts: a trade-off for protective decisions?

Cassandra A. Shivers-Williams et al.

Summary: This pilot study investigated the impact of varying geographic scales, probabilities of tornado occurrence, and presentation formats within severe weather forecasts on individuals' protective decisions. The findings showed that participants were more willing to take protective action at higher probabilities and larger geographic scales, with the propensity for action generally increasing as scale and probability increased. The relationship between geographic scale and probability is complex and was further complicated by forecast presentation format.
