Identity Politics and Trade Policy

Gene M. Grossman et al.

Summary: This study examines the trade policies resulting from political competition when well-being assessments include both material and psychosocial components. Drawing from social identity theory, the psychosocial component is defined as the pride and self-esteem an individual derives from the identity of groups with which they identify, as well as the dissonance cost incurred from identifying with different groups. Changes in social identification patterns, such as those stemming from increased income inequality or heightened class or ethnic tensions, can lead to significant shifts in trade policy.
