Language exposure in early bilingual and trilingual acquisition

Katja F. Cantone

Summary: The present study contributes to the field of bilingual and trilingual language acquisition by analyzing four multilingual families. The results reveal that exposure in some languages is lower than 20%, which may be crucial for becoming a productive multilingual speaker. Additionally, the study argues that labeling second- and third-generation children as heritage language speakers is unnecessary. The language practices in families with at least one bilingual parent are understudied and should be analyzed more carefully.
