Design and analysis of microworlds and puzzles for block-based programming

Radek Pelanek et al.

Summary: Block-based programming is a popular approach for teaching introductory programming, often used within the context of microworlds. This study aims to identify design guidelines and data analysis methods for the iterative development and improvement of microworlds and puzzles in block-based programming. Through literature review, discussion of specific examples, and analysis of student data, common elements in programming microworlds were identified, and the importance of data analysis for improving microworlds and puzzles was demonstrated. These design guidelines and analysis methods have significant implications for the development and improvement of tools for introductory programming.

Assessing computational thinking abilities among Singapore secondary students: a Rasch model measurement analysis

Shiau-Wei Chan et al.

Summary: This study validates the Computational Thinking Test (CTt) using the Rasch model, identifying higher CT abilities in male and ninth-grade students, and moderate CT abilities in female and tenth-grade students. Some test items function differently between genders and grades, providing a reference for assessing students' CT abilities.

The Associations Between Computational Thinking and Creativity: The Role of Personal Characteristics

Rotem Israel-Fishelson et al.

Summary: The study revealed interesting associations between computational thinking and creativity constructs, with positive relationships found between each of the two creativity constructs and computational thinking acquisition, as well as between the two creativity constructs themselves. Additionally, girls were found to be more creative on both creativity measures. Other differences associated with school affiliation, prior coding knowledge, and technology affinity were also discussed.
