Room-temperature solid phase surface engineering of BiOI sheets stacking g-C3N4 boosts photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI)

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: The pollution caused by Cr(VI)-based compounds has attracted global concern due to its serious harm to humans and the environment. Therefore, it is crucial to develop an effective technique to eliminate Cr(VI) in water. In this study, a BiOI/g-C3N4 (BCN) direct Z-scheme heterojunction was prepared by in-situ growing BiOI on graphitic carbon nitride using a solid phase engineering method at room temperature. The experimental results showed that the photocatalytic activity of pure BiOI was significantly enhanced by constructing the Z-scheme BCN heterostructure. The BCN-3 heterostructure exhibited the highest photocatalytic degradation efficiency of RhB with a yield of 98% for 2.5 hours and a reduction efficiency of Cr(VI) with a yield of over 99% for 1.5 hours at pH 1/4 2. The stability test demonstrated that BCN-3 still maintained over 98% reduction efficiency after 6 cycles. Additionally, the reduction mechanism was investigated, which revealed that $O2 radicals played a crucial role in reducing Cr(VI) in aqueous solution under illumination. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and free radical trapping experiments verified the direct Z-scheme charge transfer path. This study provides a new approach to design photocatalyst heterostructures for the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III).

Nitrogen-rich g-C3N4@AgPd Mott-Schottky heterojunction boosts photocatalytic hydrogen production from water and tandem reduction of NO3- and NO2-

Xinyang Liu et al.

Summary: The study synthesized a nitrogen-rich g-C3N4 and in-situ grown AgPd nanowires to build AgyPd10 (y)/g-CxN4 Mott-Schottky heterojunction, which exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity for simultaneous reduction of NO3 and NO2 in water under 365 nm irradiation. The Ag3Pd7/g-C1.95N4 catalyst showed the highest photocatalytic activity and selectivity, with removal rates of 87.4% for NO3 and 61.8% for NO2 under 365 nm irradiation at 25 degrees C.

Summary: The inadequate separation of carriers remains a major obstacle to the practical application of photocatalysis. The rational design of semiconductor photocatalysts, such as the MoSe2@Bi2S3/CdS dual Z-Scheme heterojunction, can improve the spatial separation of carriers and achieve excellent photocatalytic performance in hydrogen evolution and pollutants removal. This dual functional photocatalyst shows potential for addressing the energy crisis and environmental pollution.
