A bigger splat: The catastrophic geology of a 1.2-b.y.-old terrestrial megaclast, northwest Scotland

Z. Killingback et al.

Summary: Rockfalls from the ancient geological record are not well-documented due to poor preservation potential. A megaclast of Neoarchean Lewisian gneiss with an estimated mass of 243 kt in northwest Scotland is associated with basal breccias of the Mesoproterozoic Stoer Group. The rockfall was likely caused by rift-related seismic shaking, leading to overpressure and liquefaction of sediment below.

Quantile-based individual risk measures for rockfall-prone areas

Manon Farvacque et al.

Summary: The study proposes a new method for evaluating rockfall risk, assessing damage distribution on an individual basis through a continuous function, and using VaR and ES risk measures to better evaluate risk. Applied to the Le Brocey slope in Crolles, French Alps, the method demonstrates potential for land-use planning.
