New (and Old) Monomers from Biorefineries to Make Polymer Chemistry More Sustainable

Majd Al-Naji et al.

Summary: This article discusses recent approaches to reduce the carbon footprint of typical mass polymers by using the biorefinery concept, which involves replacing fossil monomers with those made from regrowing dendritic biomass. New and green catalytic synthetic routes for lactic acid, isosorbide, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid, and p-xylene are presented, as well as unconventional lignocellulosic biomass-derived monomers like alpha-methylene-gamma-valerolactone and levoglucosenol. The differences in catalytic unit operations of the biorefinery and the challenges that must be addressed during the synthesis of each monomer are also discussed.

Anionic polymerization of dienes in 'green' solvents

Julia Glatzel et al.

Summary: The study found that environmentally friendly alternatives like cyclopentyl methyl ether and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran can be used to produce polydienes rich in 1,2 and 3,4 units, while traditional solvents like cyclohexane are more suitable for polydienes with high amounts of 1,4 units.

100th Anniversary of Macromolecular Science Viewpoint: Redefining Sustainable Polymers

Danielle E. Fagnani et al.

Summary: There has been an increased focus on sustainable polymers in recent years, but less attention has been paid to the end-of-life fate of polymers. It is suggested to place more emphasis on chemical recycling to promote a closed-loop plastic economy, in order to keep us on the path to sustainability.

Sustainable Myrcene-Based Elastomers via a Convenient Anionic Polymerization

David Hermann Lamparelli et al.

Summary: Soluble heterocomplexes of sodium hydride and trialkylaluminum derivatives were used as anionic initiators for the polymerization of myrcene, styrene, and isoprene in toluene at 100 degrees C. By modulating the feed and ratio, elastomeric materials with diverse thermal profiles and polymeric architectures were obtained. The study also showed an accessible method for producing various elastomers through anionic copolymerization of renewable terpenes like myrcene with commodity monomers.
