The study investigated the mechanically curving-induced photoluminescence and photoluminescence anisotropy changes in an elastic organic crystal, revealing that the crystal deformation affects the intermolecular pi-pi stacking and transition dipole orientations.
Mechanical deformation-induced physical property changes of flexible molecular crystals are unique topics in materials chemistry. Here, the mechanically curving-induced photoluminescence (PL) and PL anisotropy changes in an elastic organic crystal were successfully investigated by spatially resolved mu-PL spectroscopy for the PL analysis at both the outer and inner sides. The PL characters derived from intermolecular pi-pi stacking and transition dipole orientations changes with respect to the elongation of the outer side of the crystals. The results suggested that the molecular packing and its directional arrangement change with the crystal deformation.
