ELECTRIC-FIELD-INDUCED INSTABILITIES IN NEMATIC LIQUID CRYSTALS

Eugene C. Gartland

Summary: The stability of systems involving liquid crystals in magnetic fields or electric fields has been studied. Criteria for assessing the local stability of equilibrium solutions have been developed, showing that electric-field-induced instabilities may differ qualitatively from magnetic-field-induced instabilities. Full coupling between the electric field and director field can raise or maintain an instability threshold, rather than lower it.

WEAK SEQUENTIAL STABILITY FOR A NONLINEAR MODEL OF NEMATIC ELECTROLYTES

Eduard Feireisl et al.

Summary: This article studies a system of nonlinear PDEs modeling the electrokinetics of a nematic electrolyte material consisting of various ion species in a nematic liquid crystal. It focuses on the two-species case and proves apriori estimates providing weak sequential stability, the main step towards proving the existence of weak solutions.
