Understanding the interaction mechanism of algal cells and soluble algal products foulants in forward osmosis dewatering

Hu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the membrane fouling mechanism in microalgal FO dewatering process and found that algal broth resulted in the fastest flux decline. A competitive adsorption phenomenon between cells and soluble algal products was observed in the feed solution of Chlorella vulgaris. The XDLVO theory was effective in predication of fouling potential for individual and combined feed solutions.

Harvesting of Microalgae Biomass Using Ceramic Microfiltration at High Cross-Flow Velocity

Bio Sigui B. Bamba et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of ceramic membrane microfiltration for harvesting microalgae at relatively high cross-flow velocity, showing it to be a suitable option for certain microalgae such as Chlorella vulgaris. Different algal suspensions were tested to understand the impact of feedstock characteristics on permeation flux and resistance mechanisms. The results suggest that the process can achieve high permeation fluxes with varying contributions from cake resistance and pore adsorption/blocking, depending on the algal species.

Considering the Prospect of Utilizing Anaerobic Membrane Biofouling Layers Advantageously for the Removal of Emerging Contaminants

Christelle BouNehme Sawaya et al.

Summary: Membrane biofilm formation in membrane filtration-based wastewater treatment systems has traditionally been viewed negatively due to its impact on transmembrane pressure and energy expenditure. Recent research, however, suggests a potentially positive aspect to biofouling in anaerobic membrane bioreactors with improved removal of certain emerging contaminants. This could lead to devising operational strategies that promote anaerobic biofilm development on membranes while minimizing transmembrane pressure increases for a more sustainable treatment of wastewater effluents.
