SARS-CoV-2 detection in human milk: a systematic review

Summary: Through a comprehensive analysis of 34 studies, it was found that the proportion of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in human milk is extremely low, but no conclusion can be drawn regarding its infectivity and impact on infants. Exclusive breastfeeding should be continued unless contraindications exist.

Vertical transmission of coronavirus disease 2019: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: The study found that 3.2% of 936 neonates from mothers with coronavirus disease 2019 tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 viral RNA using nasopharyngeal swab. The rates of infection are similar to those of other pathogens causing congenital infections but further research is needed to determine the rates of vertical transmission in early pregnancy and potential risk for fetal morbidity and mortality.

Clinical profile, viral load, management and outcome of neonates born to COVID 19 positive mothers: a tertiary care centre experience from India

Summary: This study found that COVID-19 positive neonates had milder clinical manifestations and the risk of transmission from positive mothers to neonates through rooming-in and breastfeeding was low. Maternal viral load was not associated with the severity of illness or positivity status in neonates.

Clinical Features and Outcome of SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Neonates: A Systematic Review

Summary: This study indicates that the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection in neonates is extremely low. Most COVID-positive newborns were symptomatic and required intensive care. Postpartum acquisition was the most common mode of infection in neonates, although a few cases of congenital infection have also been reported.

A single-center observational study on clinical features and outcomes of 21 SARS-CoV-2-infected neonates from India

Summary: This retrospective study evaluated the clinical characteristics and outcomes of neonatal SARS-CoV-2 infection, with an incidence rate of 10.6% among suspected cases. Most infected neonates were full-term, with symptoms mainly affecting the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. Supportive treatment and intensive care helped all infected neonates recover. Further research is needed to fully understand the course and implications of SARS-CoV-2 infection in neonates.

Characteristics and outcomes of neonatal SARS-CoV-2 infection in the UK: a prospective national cohort study using active surveillance

Summary: This study aimed to describe the incidence, characteristics, transmission, and outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection in neonates who received inpatient hospital care in the UK. The findings showed that neonatal SARS-CoV-2 infection was uncommon in babies admitted to hospital, with low likelihood of infection following birth to a mother with perinatal SARS-CoV-2 infection and rare possible vertical transmission. The high proportion of babies from Black, Asian, or minority ethnic groups requires further investigation.
