The study aimed to determine the antibacterial properties of Medicago denticulata against bacteria isolated from poultry litter. The results showed that the plant extract had potent antibacterial activity against resistant bacteria, particularly multi drug resistant strains. These findings suggest that active components of the plant could be isolated and further studied for antibacterial potency.
The current study was aimed to determine the antibacterial of potential Medicago denticulata against bacterial r isolated from poultry litter. The isolated bacteria included Pseudomonas, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella oxytoca, Serratia liquefaciens and Serratia fonticola, Campylobacter, Vibrio species, and Lactobacilli. Among the Lactobacilli species, L. fermentii were highly resistant to Cephalosporins (Cefpodoxime 100%, Cephradine 100%, Cefaclor 100%). Campylobacter and Pseudomonas spp. showed 100 % resistant to Amoxicillin, and Cefpodoxime, 90 % to Cephradine and Cefaclor, and 75 % resistance to Cefepime. Campylobacter and Pseudomonas spp. were 65 and 70 % resistant to Gentamicin. The Multiple Antibiotic Resistance index for Campylobacter and Pseudomonas spp. was 0.55 while for L. fermentii, it was 0.44. Different concentrations of the aqueous extract of the plant were implanted against the resistant bacteria and there was potent antibacterial activity of the plant extract against tested bacteria. It can be concluded that Medicago denticulata has the potential to inhibit/kill the multi drug resistant bacteria. Active components of this plant may be isolated and should be used against various bacteria to further confirm the antibacterial potency of the plant.
