Carbene-Catalyzed Activation of Remote Nitrogen Atoms of (Benz)imidazole-Derived Aldimines for Enantioselective Synthesis of Heterocycles

Xing Yang et al.

Summary: This new mode of carbene-catalyzed reaction involves the activation of a nitrogen atom in a triaza-diene intermediate, leading to highly enantioselective reactions with activated ketones. The reaction pathway is supported by mechanistic studies and preliminary density function theory calculations.

How Oriented External Electric Fields Modulate Reactivity

Song Yu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that an external electric field along the reaction axis enhances electrostatic and orbital interactions, lowering the reaction barrier. However, a field perpendicular to the reaction axis stabilizes only one stereoisomer pathway of the reaction.

Bifunctional Hydrogen Bond Donor-Catalyzed Diels-Alder Reactions: Origin of Stereoselectivity and Rate Enhancement

Pascal Vermeeren et al.

Summary: Through a combination of density functional theory and coupled-cluster theory, the study investigated the selectivity and rate enhancement of bifunctional hydrogen bond donor-catalyzed Diels-Alder reactions. It was found that (thio)ureas render the reactions exo selective and accelerate the process by lowering the reaction barrier by up to 7 kcal mol(-1).

How the Lewis Base F- Catalyzes the 1,3-Dipolar Cycloaddition between Carbon Dioxide and Nitrilimines

Dennis Svatunek et al.

Summary: The Lewis base F- catalyzes the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between CO2 and nitrilimines by activating the nitrilimine and enhancing the rate of the reaction. The strength of primary orbital interactions between the reactants is the origin of this catalysis. The Lewis base activated nitrilimine-F- has high-lying filled FMOs, which promote a rapid nucleophilic attack and overall cycloaddition with CO2.

How Lewis Acids Catalyze Ring-Openings of Cyclohexene Oxide

Thomas Hansen et al.

Summary: In this study, the Lewis acid-catalyzed epoxide ring-opening reactions were investigated using relativistic dispersion-corrected density functional theory. It was found that the reactivity of these reactions is enhanced as the group 1 cations increase, and the regioselectivity is influenced by steric repulsion between the nucleophile and the substrate as well as the asymmetric orbital density on the epoxide. Overall, the concept of Pauli-lowering catalysis was once again demonstrated as a general phenomenon.

Lewis Acid-Catalyzed Diels-Alder Reactions: Reactivity Trends across the Periodic Table

Pascal Vermeeren et al.

Summary: Various weakly interacting Lewis acids across the periodic table can catalyze the Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction by lowering the reaction barrier and increasing the asynchronicity of the reaction, demonstrating the generality of the Pauli repulsion-lowering catalysis concept. The reactivity can be further enhanced with a stronger binding to the dienophile, as shown when transitioning from a Period 3 to a Period 5 Lewis acid.

Catalysis by Bidentate Iodine(III)-Based Halogen Donors: Surpassing the Activity of Strong Lewis Acids

Susana Portela et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively investigated the activation and catalysis mechanism of bidentate iodine(III)-based halogen donors, finding that they can accelerate the Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction by reducing the reaction barrier and steric repulsion. Increasing the electrophilic nature of the system can further enhance the activity of the iodine(III)-catalyst, surpassing that of strong Lewis acids such as BF3.

Electrophilic reactivities of cyclic enones and α,β-unsaturated lactones

Robert J. Mayer et al.

Summary: The reactivities of cyclic enones and alpha,beta-unsaturated lactones were studied by analyzing their reactions with carbon-centered nucleophiles. It was found that cyclic enones show slightly reduced reactivity upon cyclization, while alpha,beta-unsaturated lactones are significantly more reactive than their acyclic analogs. The observed reactivity trends were rationalized through quantum-chemically calculated Gibbs energy profiles and distortion interaction analysis.

How metallylenes activate small molecules

Pascal Vermeeren et al.

Summary: In this study, the activation of dihydrogen by metallylenes was investigated using relativistic density functional theory. It was found that the reactivity of metallylenes decreases as the Group 14 element changes. Rational design of metallylenes can enhance the activation rate of small molecules and guide subsequent reactions.
