The importance of species diversity for human well-being in Europe

Joel Methorst et al.

Summary: This study found a positive correlation between bird species richness in Europe and life satisfaction, with a similar magnitude of influence as income. The study suggests that both direct multisensory experiences with birds and beneficial landscape properties may be pathways through which bird species richness influences human well-being. The results highlight the critical role of species diversity in promoting human well-being and suggest that management actions for the protection of birds and their habitats can benefit humans.

Socioeconomic and spatial inequalities of street tree abundance, species diversity, and size structure in New York City

Jian Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, street tree inequalities in New York City were examined by deriving seven street tree measures from high-resolution satellite images, Google Street View, and street tree census. The results showed that street tree inequalities are greatest with respect to tree abundance and species diversity, notably affected by race-based and education-based factors. Socially vulnerable areas with severe inequalities were identified in Brooklyn and Queens, highlighting the importance of addressing differentiated distribution of tree resources among different social groups for environmental equity.

A call to action: Improving urban green spaces to reduce health inequalities exacerbated by COVID-19

Rebecca S. Geary et al.

Summary: Health disparities exist in society, with certain vulnerable groups being at higher risk of COVID-19 due to comorbidities and structural vulnerabilities. Access to urban greenspaces can mitigate the negative health effects of the pandemic, and should be considered as a public health and social investment. Investment in greenspaces can bring additional benefits and help protect against future pandemics, leading to sustainable transformation and addressing health inequalities.

Tree species richness and diversity predicts the magnitude of urban heat island mitigation effects of greenspaces

Xinjun Wang et al.

Summary: By studying the tree community structure of greenspaces in Changzhou, China, it was found that indicators such as the Shannon-Wiener diversity index, tree species richness, and tree canopy coverage are closely related to the strength of the cooling effect, with varying seasonal impacts. Mean crown width is positively correlated with the cooling range in summer and autumn, while greenspace tree density is negatively correlated with the cooling range in winter.

Species richness is positively related to mental health - A study for Germany

Joel Methorst et al.

Summary: This study reveals a significant positive relationship between species diversity, particularly plant and bird species richness, and human mental health. Policy makers and greenspace managers are advised to support biodiverse environments to promote human health and wellbeing, using species diversity measures as indicators for the salutogenic characteristics of nature, landscape, and urban green space.

Bird Diversity Unconsciously Increases People's Satisfaction with Where They Live

Lauren Hepburn et al.

Summary: This study found a significant correlation between residents' neighborhood satisfaction and objective environmental features, such as bird diversity, tree canopy cover, and distance to water. Neighborhood satisfaction increased with the number of bird species nearby and was also influenced by tree canopy cover and proximity to water. Residents consciously appreciated trees and water, but the relationship between bird diversity and neighborhood satisfaction appeared to be unconscious, suggesting that a diverse bird community may provoke feelings of satisfaction through their presence, activity, and songs.
